Ratings tell you where an organisation stands. They do not always tell you why.
Principa has achieved Level 1 B-BBEE Contributor status, the highest possible rating under South Africa’s Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment framework. We are proud of this achievement. But we want to be clear about what it represents, because the number alone does not tell the full story.
This is not the result of a compliance exercise. It is the formal recognition of choices we have been making for over 25 years about who we hire, how we develop people, what markets we serve, and what we believe the role of technology should be in a country still working through the consequences of its history.
Inclusion is not a value we added to our strategy. It is the reason our strategy exists.
What B-BBEE Actually Measures
B-BBEE Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment is South Africa’s legislative framework for measuring how businesses contribute to the economic participation of Black South Africans. It is scored across five elements:
Ownership the extent to which Black South Africans hold equity in the business.
Management control representation at board and senior management level.
Skills development investment in training and capability-building for Black employees.
Enterprise and supplier development support for Black-owned businesses in the supply chain.
Socio-economic development contributes to broader community and social investment.
Level 1 is the top tier. It is not easily achieved. It requires meaningful, measurable performance across all five elements, not strength in one area while ignoring others. It is, by design, a holistic measure.
Why This reflects Who We Are
Principa was founded in Cape Town in 2000 with a specific purpose: to help African lenders make smarter, fairer, and more accurate credit decisions. The ‘African’ in that sentence was never incidental. From the beginning, we were building for a context that global credit tools were not designed to serve.
South Africa’s credit market is shaped by its history. The majority of economically active South Africans, people who trade informally, earn variable incomes, and live outside the formal systems that traditional credit models rely on have been systematically underserved. They have the economic activity. They have the repayment intent. What they often lack is a credit bureau footprint.
Our work has always been about building models that can see these customers not by lowering risk standards but by using better data and smarter analytics. That work is, at its core, a form of inclusion.
The institutions that learn to score thin-file customers responsibly will grow faster than those that don’t. The opportunity is commercial and ethical at the same time.
So, when we say that Level 1 B-BBEE reflects who we are, we mean it literally. Our transformation journey did not begin when we decided to pursue a rating. It began when we decided what kind of company we wanted to build.
What It Means for Our Clients
For many of our clients’ banks, retailers, insurers, and microfinanciers operating in South Africa, B-BBEE compliance is not optional. It is a legal and commercial requirement. Their own ratings are partially determined by who they partner with.
Achieving Level 1 status means that Principa is now the strongest possible partner from a transformation scorecard perspective. Clients who procure from us benefit directly from our rating. This is not a small thing in an industry where every scorecard point is scrutinised.

Where We Go from Here
The work of financial inclusion in South Africa is not complete. The credit gap remains enormous. Millions of people who should have access to formal financial services still do not. The regulatory environment is evolving. The technology is advancing. The expectations of clients, employees, and society are rising.
Level 1 B-BBEE contributor status is an important milestone, but our focus remains unchanged: helping organisations make smarter decisions that reduce risk, expand access, and create stronger outcomes for the people and communities they serve.
Level 1 is not a destination. It is a baseline.
